Slow Retrospect of Sound Rambles
Published on .
First of all, happy Year of the Snake, now that the Lunar calendar has officially reset as of the past week.
Admittedly, things have been really slow for the first month of 2025 due to a combination of scheduling issues, lack of drive, and, most recently, a pest issue in my house. I haven’t done nothing per se, but it hasn’t been a whole lot, either, with the exception of projects for others that I shouldn’t get specific over for NDA reasons.
I have spent some time toying with sound design, however. One of the ways is for a musical context: now that I’ve figured out how to configure my Synclavier Regen synthesizer to emit multiple outputs to my computer, I’m trying to use it more often. Hopefully might even get enough musical ideas to do a followup to my “Regenerate” piece from my Waveforms EP.
I’ve also taken an interest in old stock sound effects, however, due in part to offering to contribute sound effects for Zid Journey. It’s remarkable how few video game sound designers back in the day emphasized making their own sounds over stock libraries. I’ve spent some of my time lately compiling a spreadsheet for all of the sound sources used in Thief: The Dark Project, and while many were processed beyond mere compression, it’s a bit amazing how many of the trademark sounds in the game originated from stock libraries and, in some cases, even preexisting copyrighted music. More info can be found here.
Apologies again for this being a slow month. Hopefully will have something more meaningful after my birthday this month.
